Unlock the secrets to a successful college visit

Making the most of your campus visit

Visiting a college campus is an exciting opportunity to get a feel for what could be your future home for the next few years. Here are some of Sorority Prep’s creative tips to ensure you make the most of your college visit:

  1. Connect with a Local

Before you head to campus, consider contacting a friend or family member who currently attends the college or resides nearby. Having someone knowledgeable about the area can offer invaluable insights and enhance your visit. Inquire about their favorite hangouts or must-see attractions during your stay. It's helpful to compile a list of places you'd like to explore while you're in town. Additionally, try to experience a day in the life of a freshman while you're there to better understand what your time at the college will be like. After your freshman year, where do upperclassmen tend to live, whether on or off campus? Do you need a car to navigate around town, or is it possible to manage without one, especially if you only use a vehicle on weekends and want to avoid parking fees?

  2. Observe the Campus Culture

Take some time to simply observe. What are students wearing? Is there a vibrant, energetic atmosphere? These observations can tell you a lot about the campus culture and whether it aligns with what you're looking for in a college experience. Notice students' interactions, and if you can try to observe events—club meetings, sports, or specific areas of interest for you—as indicators of campus life. Drop by the campus life office to ask about specific organizations on campus and freshmen involvement.

Check out upcoming events, reflecting campus diversity and inclusion. Are there clubs or causes that interest you? Make sure to go see the sorority houses or Greek Life area of campus, to get a feel for what is offered.

Talk with students. Ask about their experiences, what they love, and challenges they've faced. Attend events such as a football game or campus-wide activities to gain insights into what a typical day is like. Remember, college is about finding a place where you feel comfortable and inspired to grow.

  3. Explore Local Shops

Venturing beyond the campus can also give you a sense of the community. Visit local boutique shops or resturants, and chat with the workers. You might find some of them are students involved in Greek life or other campus activities, providing you with a unique perspective on student life.

By following these tips, you'll be able to gather a comprehensive view of the college, helping you make an informed decision about whether it's the right fit for you. Enjoy your visit!
